On a quick-ship job, the schedule is the product. When a switchboard is holding up an energization date, what matters isn’t just when the gear ships — it’s whether you can trust that date enough to book crews, schedule inspections, and sequence the rest of the job around it.

Contractors and end users in the Chicago area have always had an easy way to build that trust: drive over, walk the ASD floor, and look at their switchboard as it comes together. If you’re ordering from out of state — or working with ASD for the first time — you don’t have that option. You’re being asked to put acritical-path item in the hands of a shop you’ve never seen.

Ordering gear you can’t see

The conventional manufacturing experience doesn’t help. You send a PO. You get an order confirmation. You get a ship date. In between, you get silence.

For most of the build, the switchboard is a black box. If the date slips, you find out late. If something in the layout doesn’t match how your crew plans to land cable, you find out at delivery — when the gear is set, the walls are closed in, and every change is a field modification.

Why it matters

The payoff shows up in three places that contractors and project teams care about most:

Schedule confidence. Progress you can see is progress you can plan around. Photos of your gear taking shape are better evidence than any status call, and they give you something concrete to share with the GC, the owner, and the utility when they ask where the switchboard stands.

Field planning. Progress photos show contractors exactly how the sections are laid out and where they’ll terminate their cables. Your crew can plan conduit routing, bending, and cable lengths before the gear arrives — instead of working it out on the floor on delivery day.

Flexibility while it still counts. Because you see the build as it happens, there’s still time to act on what you see. Need to adjust a detail of the design? While the switchboard is still in manufacturing, ASD can accommodate changes that would be off the table at a larger manufacturer — and impossible after delivery.
